Best 90s Soundtrack Tournament Finals

The finals are here! Though we didn’t have any tiebreakers, last round was the most contentious. Romeo + Juliet beat Boogie Nights by one vote. The Matrix beat The Wedding Singer by one vote. The only clear winner was Clueless over Empire Records. Maybe if Empire Records didn’t have to go in a tiebreaker in Round 3 people would have supported the team rallying against ‘the man.’ We’ll never know.

Dazed & Confused won the 90-94 bracket. It easily defeated Philadelphia in Round 1, handled Goodfellas with ease in Round 2, barely took out Wayne’s World (Alice Cooper vs. Alice Cooper) in Round 3 and once again strolled to victory over Reservoir Dogs in Round 4.

Clueless had a somewhat easy path to victory in the 94-96 bracket. Dumb & Dumber did not put up a fight in Round 1, Kids didn’t have a chance in Round 2, Friday didn’t live up to expectation in Round 3 and Empire Records had its poorest performance in Round 4.

Romeo + Juliet, a favorite from the start, had to overcome two tough matchups. Set If Off was under appreciated in Round 1 and R+J won with the biggest margin thus far. Jackie Brown also underperformed in Round 2. But a tight race against Grosse Pointe Blank in Round 3 and as-tight-as-you-can-get race against Boogie Nights in Round 4 gave R+J the 96-97 bracket in Round 4. In that round the Baz Luhrmann film lost on Twitter but took it home on Instagram.

Finally, The Matrix won the 98-99 bracket. The only film that began and maintained the number one seed throughout all rounds, it destroyed Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels in Round 1, did an even bigger job on Godzilla in Round 2, took out a well performing Go in Round 3 and beat The Wedding Singer by one vote in Round 4.

Voting for the finals begins now.
