Marge Simpson is the Best Fictional Mom

Marge Simpson is officially the Best Fictional Mom. After defeating 63 other film and television moms, the character that has been a mom the longest officially won our tournament.

Marge Simpson defeated Morticia Addams from The Addams Family (from the 1991 and 1993 films portrayed by Anjelica Houston) in the finals. Here’s how we got to that matchup.

We kicked things off with film. Morticia easily defeated Lorraine Baines McFly from Back to the Future in round 1. This shouldn’t come as a surprise considering what happened in the first Back to the Future.

Morticia’s dominance continued in round 2. In our only contest that garnered zero votes for one of the candidates, Moro from Princess Mononoke, received no love in our Twitter poll.

Based on how well Helen Parr from Incredibles performed in rounds 1 and 2, Morticia’s victory in round 3 was somewhat of an upset, even though the vote total was never close.

In a somewhat surprising round 4, Morticia soundly defeated Sarah Connor (as portrayed by Linda Hamilton) from the Terminator film series. We were somewhat close to a Sarah Connor vs. Ellen Ripley (the battle of James Cameron moms!) finals, but alas, Morticia could not be stopped.

Mrs. Addams finally took out Ellen Ripley in the finals and was our Best Fictional Mom – Film representative.

Marge’s road to victory was much, much rockier. Round 1 was Marge’s easiest, taking out Lady Rainicorn from Adventure Time with Finn and Jake.

The tightest contest of the entire tournament was in Round 2 of the TV moms: Marge Simpson vs. Linda Belcher from Bob’s Burgers. Linda beat Marge by one vote on Twitter. Marge beat Linda by two votes on Instagram. Linda’s TV network peer moved on.

Round 3 wasn’t as close as predicted. Marge soundly took out Peggy Hill. Hill dominated in rounds 1 and 2.

The fourth and final rounds were as easy as round 1 for Mrs. Simpson, with Marge destroying Lorelai Gilmore and finally taking out Moira Rose.

The final result was never in doubt. Though relatively close, Marge maintained a lead the entire time in both polls.

It feels like the correct fictional mom won.

Marge has been a fictional mother longer than any of the other 63 fictional moms. Marge has more screen time than the other 63 fictional moms. Marge has three children, more children than the average of the 64 fictional moms. Marge has seemingly done it all and done it all for her family. Marge Simpson is the 2022 Recommend If You Like Best Fictional Mom.

Without further adieu, here’s Diana Metzger on our winner…

Marge Simpson is a God Damn Saint

I don’t know whether it was because I grew up on The Simpsons and it’s formative for my emotional development or because she’s just a warmest mother on television, but Marge Simpson reminds me of my own mother and now that I’m a mother myself I can see a lot of her in me. I know her gravely sigh/groan very well. But I also admire her grit.

She’s been doing the job for a very long time and somehow does not seem to age; which is great news for her… but also none of her children age either and all three are under the age of 11 so she’s really being put through it. She has to spend almost every day mothering in a strapless dress and heels which especially during Covid times seems unbearably cruel.

Marge is a stay-at-home mother with occasional out of the home jobs which she always seems to excel at in extraordinary ways. The woman was a published author, a police officer, even a brief stint as the mayor of Springfield. It’s always outside negative forces in the world that make her quit and bring her back home. Whether it’s being MeToo-ed by Mr. Burns or exposing corruption in the police force, Marge saw it all. Her co-workers and her town never stood by her but her family did.

Marge is a pure, empathetic soul and a truth-teller and when society knocked her down she found love and stability in her nutty family and that gave her the strength to keep trying, to keep putting herself out there.

With Marge’s cruel mother and nasty and unsupportive sisters, it’s a wonder she’s so warm hearted, so patient and so loving. She left her damn spa getaway at Rancho Relaxo just because she missed her family and they truly do fall apart without her. Marge gives her all to her family; whether it’s supporting Lisa’s outspoken nature, dancing with Bart to cheer him up, taking care of Maggie the eternal infant, or keeping it spicy for her Mr. Plow, Marge is the rock of her family.

Homer gets a lot of hero moments through the years, but Marge is that great woman behind the man every single time. It was truly her skepticism and perseverance that saved Springfield from monorail destruction. Fortunately her hair is very high (certainly higher and in effect closer to God than Helen Lovejoy’s hair) and very blue so she’s never in Homer’s shadow. Homer bumbles into his wins, but Marge’s successes always come out of hard work and thoughtfulness.

Marge allows her kids to thrive exactly as they are. Bart can be a perpetual scamp because he knows his mother will always help him. Lisa is soulful and outspoken because she sees her mother be able to do any task thrown at her and sometimes suffer in silence and wants better for all women. Maggie, well Maggie will eternally stay a baby just for the opportunity to be with Marge all day long. No mother on television or film could hold a candle to Marge. Homer even swore off beer for Marge and that’s his entire personality. We should all be so powerful.
